It was a colourful Tuesday evening under the lights at Tooting & Mitcham United, with pink taking on yellow as both teams lined up in their away kits.
Tooting came out of the blocks blazing as they penned Ashford in straight from the kick-off. Their pace and strength had the Tangerines on the back foot, and after a good first couple of attacking moves were rewarded with an early goal on 6 minutes when Hady Ghandour got on the end of a clinical cross from their left. Ashford then weathered the storm and defended well as Tooting continued to press.
Just before the half hour mark Kelvin Adjei got the better of the Tooting defence, winning the ball off the last defender but having rounded the keeper was blocked by a last-ditch tackle resulting in a corner. From which Max Webb pulled Ashford level with a powerful header.
The equaliser seemed to rock Tooting and the game evened out for a while with a lot of midfield play. They managed to up their game again though as half time approached and retook the lead in the 41st minute. This time it was a cross from their right wing to the far post where David Castanho peeled away and headed back across the goal to make it 2-1.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, but at a slower tempo, with no real clear-cut chances for either side in the early stages. Tooting continued to attack down both wings, always looking to get behind and cross, and Ashford looked to push forward at every opportunity in search of another equaliser. The game was made safe for Tooting in the 71st minute after Ashford lost the ball on the halfway line and a swift attack down the right and hard low cross to the centre was met by Danny Bassett to slot home their third. Tooting then saw the remainder of the game out to take the win.
Ashford now look to Saturday where we switch to FA Cup action with an away tip to Sutton Athletic.
