Ashford 0 – 0 Winchester City

Saturday 29 August 2020 | Preseason Friendly

Very entertaining for a no score draw. An even game with some great end to end play.

Ashford welceomed Winchester City to the RPS for their second home friendly of the week. It was a bit more windy city as both teams went through their pre-match warm ups. The pitch held up superbly during the week what with the rain and three games in the space of five days. Huge thanks to Liam Balmer and the ground team for their excellent work as always.

Ashford got things underway for the first half. And with a few of the unavailble players and walking wounded returning, Luke Tuffs took the opportunity to test out new players and different options. The opening moments were very back and forth with the visitors grabbing the first real chance in the 9th minute to which Jake Maddock made a good block in the Ashford goal.

The Tangerines created a couple of good opportunities just before the half hour mark. The first on 28 minutes, A good passing move found Dan Brown just on the edge of the box where he was and able to turn and get a shot on goal but the Winchester keeper saved comfortably down to his left. One moment later and it was another chance as Ashford broke down the left and trialist number 11 got in another good effort on goal. These came after a very even period with most of the play in the midfield areas for both sides.

A couple of minutes later and it was Jake Maddock who was called in to action again in the home goal. Winchester with their own attacking move, breaking at the Ashford defence, getting a shot off just inside the box but thankfully straight at Maddock who held well. That was the story of the rest of the half. Both teams getting forward at every opportunity with a majority of the play in the midfield quarters.

The re-start picked up pretty much where the first half ended. From the kick off it looked very even and had that end to end feel. that was until the 54th minute when Ashford were awarded a penalty as they broke in to the visitors area. Jack French stepped up for the spot kick but his effort was saved well down to his right by Charlie Philpott.

Ten minutes later and the Tangerines had another chance from a good move down the left wing. The ball fizzed across goal and just needed either Matt Bunyan or Kane Fitzgerald to make a connection as they ran in. Ashford followed this up with another good opportunity but Philpott was there again to hold safely for Winchester. It was the visitors who nearly broke the deadlock though in the 69th. Substitute Purdy broke clear closing in on goal but was forced wide as he tried to round Jake Maddock. The Ashford keeper holding his ground well to make the striker go too wide. As the action again see-sawed back the Tangerines again went close on 71 minutes. A great free-kick from Aaron Petch going just over the bar from around 30 yards out.

Ashford possibly shaded the goalscoring chances in the final ten minutes. The most notable coming just before the final whistle. Aaron Petch was close again in the 88th. A good cross / shot saved and held well by Philpott. Followed by a chest down and volley from Kane Fitzgerald a moment later which flew just wide of the goal.

A thoroughly entertaining game for a 0-0. Pretty even overall, with possibly a few more chances falling to the Tangerines in the later stages. Another very good run out for the team though as preseason nears it’s end. Thank you to everyone Winchester City for a great game, and all of their supporters for making the trip. The very best of luck for the rest of the season. For Ashford it’s now on to a final preseason game at home to Hartley Wintney next Saturday before the league and cup kick offs.
