Barry Smith’s funeral will take place at Hanworth Crematorium on Tuesday 22 January at 2.00 p.m. There will be a wake back at Ashford after the funeral and all ex-colleagues and friends, etc. of Barry will be very welcome to attend. It was only in recent seasons that Barry came to be associated with Ashford although he had been known to some of us right back to the 60’s. He even had a part in choosing Ashford’s original colours of tangerine as he was a Blackpool supporter just like our first Secretary, Alan Hughes.
Barry became a regular supporter of the club some five years ago and did at one point help us with money raising. He left for a while as he was unhappy with the language used by a player after he had been sent off but soon returned and will be missed even though his forthright views on just about everything did not always go down so well. He was more associated before that with Staines Town where he acted in various capacities, including physio for a few seasons and much further back in the 60’s and 70’s with a Sunday club, Staines Royals, where may of the Ashford squad in those days also played.
If you are aware of any of Barry’s old friends who may not see this, please pass the word on.
