Cobham 1 – 3 Ashford
Tuesday 18 August 2020 | Preseason Friendly
A superb first half performance from the Tangerines saw them to a very comfortable win against Cobham in their best preseason performance yet.
Tuesday night saw a very strong performance from the Tangerines. Especially in the first half. The return of midfielders Jack French, Kane Fitzgerald, and Brad Sweeney gave the side a different dimension, with great energy and attacking play. Superb bounceback-ability after the defeat to Southall in the previous game.
ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK
Right from the first whistle Ashford were full of energy and desire to take the game to Cobham. High pressing and hunting in packs when out of possession, and then moving the ball forward as quick as possible when they gained possession. The desire was there in spades, and it only took 5 minutes to take the lead. Jack French converting from a free-kick after some neat play. It was almost 2 in the twelfth minute when Kane Fitzgerald got in on goal but his effort was saved well for a corner.
Ashford had to wait until 26 minutes for their second goal. Great work on the right wing from Brad Sweeney saw the ball crossed in to the near post where Kane Fitzgerald stole in to convert from close range ahead of the defender. And then straight from the restart it was three a minute later when number 4 George (we will find out his surname and edit this!!) hit a well struck shot from the edge of the box. Finishing low and left of the keeper. All this after more good pressing and attacking from Ashford as a whole.
The hosts did have a glorious chance to pull one back on 33 minutes but the chance went just high from around 8 yards out. Ashford could have made it 4 just before half time. Kane Fitzgerald got in on goal again but the keeper made a good save at his near post to keep it out.
The second half saw a few changes as is the norm in preseason. With this Ashford lost a little of their energy and pressing in the early stages. Cobham started to feel their way in to the game more after the restart and hit back with an absolute screamer of a goal on 54 minutes. A fierce shot across goal that hit the far top corner to make it 1-3. It was Ashford that came close to the next goal though. Dan Brown snatching a shot on the six yard line after a corner from the right. Again the Cobham keeper was there to parry wide though.
Cobham continued to try and get a foothold back in the play but Ashford were looking good for their lead. Keeping control in the main. Kane Fitzgerald again came close to another goal with a well struck low freekick just after the hour. Once again the Cobham keeper was quickly down to his right to block well.
Both sides had opportunities in the late stages. Jack French came close with a fierce shot in the 73rd minute. Another good save keeping it out though. And then Ashford’s second half sub Josh Wilson blocked a Cobahm effort on the line in the 82nd. That was the last of the main action and the Tangerines controlled the reminder to leave with the win. Another good preseason game, well played and hosted by Cobham. Many thanks to everyone there, and the best of luck for the season ahead.
