Although Ashford Town had never won the Surrey Premier League, a second-placed finish in 1989-90 had secured promotion to the Combined Counties League and, with it, a name change. Because the (now defunct) Kent club also called Ashford Town had held Senior status for longer, The FA demanded that the Ash Trees amend their own title. It was for this reason that ‘(Middlesex)’ was added to the club’s name.

Statistically, the club’s decade in the Combined Counties League was the most successful period enjoyed to date. The Championship was won five times in six seasons, only for the Tangerines to be consistently denied promotion due to issues with the Short Lane ground. Initially, these concerned ground grading but when Ashford met these criteria, they then found their lease on the stadium was too short to meet the League’s requirements. When a new lease was signed, Town were finally able to move into the Isthmian League.
