The Under 18’s opened their League season with an away trip to Cranleigh Youth in the Tony Ford Combined Counties Youth League.
Following last week’s competitive season opener against Hayes & Yeading United in the FA Youth Cup, it was on to the league for the Young Tangerines. Ashford had a long and bad journey to Cranleigh which seemed to affect the team as they started slowly and ended up on the end of 6-0 defeat. The U18’s were unable to cope with the pace and aggression of Cranleigh and soon found themselves trailing 2-0 early on. After steadying themselves somewhat they got more in to the game as the half went on, but were undone again twice before the break as Cranleigh made it 4-0.
The second half was much more even, with Ashford making two substitutions, but they were unable to convert several chances that came there way. Cranleigh made Ashford pay for not taking their chances as they grabbed another two goals late on to run out 6-0 winners in this first encounter. The disruption before kick-off badly affected the team set up, as it did at Hayes & Yeading, but the team need to overcome this and start a lot better, looking to get control of games. Hopefully with these two defeats this will now register as the season gets fully underway.
Next up for the U18’s is a return to the RPS on the 23rd September vs Manorcroft.
