This evening, Monday, Ashford entertain Farnborough in the final pre-season match before Saturday’s opener at home to Hertford Town. Sadly the pitch is not lush with grass as it normally is at this time of the year but much work in the recent days despite the never ending drought have produced a playable pitch.
It has not been the happiest pre-season for the club starting with the sad loss of our Chairman Dave Baker. The place is just not the same without him around but we have to get on with it of course. Pre-season has not gone well in terms of results although nobody will remember that if we get off to a good start as we generally do. After some five years of a stability that few clubs could match we have lost some of our stalwarts. Jack Beadle and Alex Fisher both wished to try their hand at Step 3 and have joined Met Police and all their long journeys down to the West Country. Both are fully aware that they will be very welcome back if it does not work out for them. Romario Jonas is believed to be trialling at Hendon and the same goes for him, whilst Mark Bitmead has dropped down the ladder to Step 5. That one is not so easy to understand but Mark has been a great servant of this club despite his occasional wandering and he too will always be welcome to return. It was also inevitable that Tom Howard and Mitchal Gough would return to Step 3.
Needless to say, the Management have been busy in recruiting replacements and those who witnessed the match against the Police will be aware that we have some new very capable players in our ranks. It will doubtless take a little time to gel but everything is geared to Saturday.
We welcome Farnborough this evening and thank them for coming as always. Admission is £5 (£3 OAP’s and children under-16 free).
There will be more on our Saturday opponents, Hertford Town, later this week as we re-join the Bostik League for the third time in recent seasons.
