Following the sad loss of our Chairman, Dave Baker, recently, the Club’s Management Committee voted unanimously last week to appoint Alan Constable and Nick Bailey to act as Joint Chairmen for the forthcoming season, until next season’s AGM.
Both Nick and Alan will do their best to follow in Dave’s footsteps and two new initiatives are already on the cards. Firstly, a new glasswasher is to be purchased as there have been some complaints recently that the current one, which is just about as old as the clubhouse itself, is no longer performing efficiently and is affecting the quality of the beer. The matter is in hand!
Secondly and doubtless of greater interest, certainly to our junior players is that next season the only side playing on the main pitch on Sundays will be the Ladies. That leaves some capacity and it has been decided that, on certain weeks, there will be a Junior Section “match of the day” when the team concerned will be able to play on the main pitch. Nick will allocate the teams as he sees fit but it may be following a particularly good game the previous week or there is an important cup match. It won’t happen in the depth of winter when we have to protect the surface but hopefully it will be appreciated by members of our Junior section.
Following Saturday’s very successful event in support of Eden Eyre, a little local girl who needs treatment in America, there is a great deal of tidying up to be done if anyone can spare a few hours this week. The club has also committed to its annual clearance behind the stands and the bottom goal and this will also include the waster area by the trees on the junior side It is being undertaken under the eagle eye of Steve Honey and hopefully will take place this week.
We are still looking for someone to take over tea and burger duties on match days following Louise’s retirement at the end of last season. Lou and her helpers will be a hard act to follow but if anyone is interested please come forward and we’ll talk terms.
Two new kits have been ordered for the 1st Team, the away kit being all yellow to tie in with the registered colours of our main sponsors, Hitchcock and King, to whom we remain extremely grateful for their continuing support.
Coming up this week is a further friendly, this time away on Wednesday at Bedfont Sports, against CCL Division One side FC Deportivo Galicia. Kick-off is 7.45 p.m.
With a lot of new players involved, Ashford lost yesterday at Abbey Rangers, 1-3, following two late goals for the home side. Given the unavoidable rock hard conditions, all the players involved from both sides put up a good performance and Abbey’s hospitality, as always, was excellent. Probably at least ten players over the two halves were wearing the Ashford strip for the first time and there were some promising displays. Manager Ben Murray will be back on Wednesday evening, following his Wimbledon duties in time for the Deportivo game.
Next Sunday we have another big day at the club when a similar event to that of this last week will be held, this time in support of Alfie Ward, who is similarly suffering from a rare form of cancer and needs treatment in America. Thanks to the hard work of Natalie Cox, there will be lots going on during the day so please come down and support this worthy event. We will put up more details during the week.
