Preview: Sat 7 Apr 18: Ashford v Chalfont St. Peter
We have our third successive home Saturday league match this week when we look forward to the visit of Chalfont St. Peter to Short Lane.
On paper this will be the toughest of the three games as our visitors are still in the promotion race, sitting just one place off the play-off positions. Ex-Ashford player Jack Mullan who was a crowd favourite here, is within their ranks and it will be good to see him if he is in their squad.
Chalfont’s recent form shows a draw at Marlow, a 0-2 defeat at Bedford Town and a 2-0 home win over Marlow on Tuesday evening. We have now gone nine matches against them though since we last beat them so it is fair to say they have very much been our bogey side over a number of seasons now. We often seem to play quite well but they have nearly always found a way to beat us, amply demonstrated by the reverse match earlier in the season when we enjoyed quite a considerable amount of possession but ended up losing 0-2.
That said our recent form has been good and we are enjoying an excellent run with four wins from the last five. Probably the most impressive performance was last Saturday when, after an even first half, Uxbridge had no answer to us in the second period as we ran out 4-1 winners, courtesy of goals from Mitchal Gough (2, 1 pen), Tom Howard and Conor Moody. It’s good to see Conor back in a tangerine shirt again after leaving Bedfont Sports. It was difficult last week to pick a “man of the match” but it went eventually to Tom Howard who has been one of our best players since arriving from Merstham. Mitchal Gough was also on great form at the back and scoring goals but every player deserved the applause at the end last week when they came off.
The Moneyfields match on Easter Monday was postponed and has been re-arranged for Tuesday 24 April. There is no midweek match for the 1st Team so the next game after today is away to Marlow next Saturday.
Today’s ball sponsor is Bob Lewis, who also stepped in last week at short notice so many thanks Bob for your ongoing generosity. If anyone else can sponsor either a match (£250) or the match ball (£50) please come forward.
We would also urge our members to make greater use of the bar. We have four top bar maids who will all make you very welcome and the bar is open every day from 4.00 now it is summer time, except Mondays. We have BT Sport as well as Sky, plus the pool table and so on.
