Southall 2 – 1 Ashford

Saturday 12 September 2020 | FA Cup Preliminary Round

A new experience for Tangerines, being the away team at home, but it was our tenants that came out on top in the last minute to progress in the FA Cup.

It was landlords being hosted by tenants in the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. Definitely a differencet experience being hosted in your own ground. Being in the away changing room, dug out, and change strip. and facing our good friends Southall.

EARLY STAGES

After a very strong start to their league campaign Southall were always going to be on the up for this game. The Tangerines did fly out of the starting blocks though and could have scored in the very first minute. Sam Humphreys with a good low effort which was saved at the near post. For the opening stages it was Ashford who pressed hard putting pressure on their hosts. After a couple more half chances it was another pressured attacking move that brought the opening goal. Southall under pressure in defence with another move in behind, tried to clear the ball, but unfortunately the attempt ending up lobbing their own advancing keeper before dropping in to the empty goal. 0-1 to the Tangerines.

It was then almost two for Ashford straight from the restart as they got at Southall again. A quick attacking move bringing another good save from the keeper to deny Sam Humpreys for a second time. The home side did then settle more as the half went on, and had a good opportunity themselves after the half hour mark with a shot from distance dipping just over the Ashford goal. The returning Paul McCarthy in the Tangerines goal was on hand a number of times cutting out crosses and handling very well on his first game back since signing in the week.

SECOND HALF

Southall got the second half underway and picked up where they had left off. Looking to impress more in the play and get forward. Ashford were also looking to pressure more and push on in search of that second goal. And it was almost two on 49 minutes but for another fine save. Just over ten minutes later another attacking move from Ashford saw Samuel Bello-Balogun snatch a shot from around the penalty spot. Some lovely passing from left to right then finding him for a right foot shot at goal. the effort just lacked enough power to trouble the Southall keeper.

Southall found their way back in to the game, as Ashford seemed to tire after the hour mark, and were awarded a free-kick just outside the left side of the Ashford penalty area. Potentialy a bit of a soft decision which Darryl Harrison contested with the referee. It was almost a corner kick in reality but was whipped in to the far past where it beat everbody, including the diving McCarthy to bend inside the far post. 1-1. This definiely gave the home side a big lift just as the Tangerines were struggling. A couple of Ashford substitutions did help to balance things out a little, but Southall were starting to look the more energetic with the boost of that equalising goal.

Southall started to counter more from Ashfords attacking moves. They created a good move in the 85th minute hitting on the counter down their left before switching play to the opposite wing with a god cross field pass. the advancing McCarthy was out quick to block the chip though. Then 5 minutes later almost a carbon copy move saw Southall capitalise after a misjudged bounce just inside their own half. Latching on quickly spreading the play across feld to the right wing again. This time they were able to get a cross shot in which Paul McCarthy got down to save but could only parry for the on-rushing striker to tap home and snatch a last gasp winner. With only  couple of minutes of injury time to be added this was virtually the last main action of the tie. A big blow to Ashford after working so hard throughout the game.

Congratulations to The All on their win. Thanks for the hospitality, and the very best of luck in the next round.
