The Under 18’s finished their preseason on Wednesday evening away to Spelthorne Sports, going down 2-1 in a feisty and competitive friendly.

Ashford struggled from the offset to adjust to the hard bouncy pitch, but they dug in and slowly started to get into the game. The breakthrough came on 20 minutes, unfortunately it was Spelthorne though who took the lead, when Ashford only half cleared the ball to the edge of the area from where a shot struck the arm of Sonny James resulting in a penalty. Josh Wilson guessed right and got down well but was unable to keep out the spot kick as it was well placed in to the bottom corner (1-0). In response the young Tangerines looked to get forward and use the width of the pitch more, and their efforts were rewarded in the 28th minute with a free kick right on the edge of the Spelthorne penalty area. Teddy Williams stepped up to curl a fantastic strike round the wall and in to the bottom left hand corner (1-1).

From then on neither team really created anything either side of half time and the game looked to be heading for a draw, until the 79th minute when another set piece broke the deadlock. Spelthorne got a free-kick just inside the Ashford half which was lofted to the far post where a good header back across goal made it 2-1. Ashford tried hard to respond without creating any clear chances though, and Spelthorne saw the game out to secure the win.
