It was an afternoon to forget for the Tangerines as they crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle, losing heavily away to Sutton Athletic.
On a hot sunny afternoon Ashford were behind from the 13th and never managed to get back in to the game. A neat move getting Sutton in behind the defence ended with a square ball across and a cool slot home to make it 1-0. From then on it was all downhill for Ashford as they seemingly wilted in the August sun.
In response to going one down, Ashford did create a couple of good opportunities to test the keeper but dwelled on the ball too long and failed to shoot on both occasions. After a water break on 30 minutes things got worse, with Sutton grabbing a second after blocking the ball and tapping it home in to the empty net. It could have been worse at half time as well with Sutton then hitting the post and having a couple more good chances to extend their lead. Things did get worse early in the second half though, and any lingering hopes were extinguished in the 56th minute, as Sutton made it 3-0 with a superbly struck free kick from well outside the box. Three became four, and then five, as they netted again on 59 and 62 minutes. The rout was completed in the 71st minute with Sutton grabbing another to knock Ashford for six. Overall it was most certainly one to forget for the Tangerines, and with another game on Monday they must pick themselves up and regroup quickly.
Sutton deservedly won the tie, and we wish them all the best in the next round. For Ashford, it’s been a tough start to the season and we now look to the league game at home to Westfield in 48hrs time.
