Southern Combination Cup | 1st Round

Ashford travelled to Sutton Wednesday night to play catch up in the long overdue Southern Combination Cup 1st Round tie.

On a bitterly cold night it was a much changed Ashford side that had the early chances. Aaron Petch came close as early as 5 minutes when his free-kick curled over the wall superbly only to hit the crossbar. The Tangerines then struck first, with a long range shot from Hafid Bounyafe beating the diving keeper to his right to give the visitors a 17th minute advantage. However, the home side levelled things up ten minutes later with the score staying 1-1 at the break after a scrappy first half.

It was Sutton who then burst out the traps from the second half kick-off and took the lead in the 47th minute, catching Ashford cold! The visitors then came close to an equaliser on 74 minutes when a cross from the left struck the bar, to which Sutton Common replied at the other end as a close range header forced a great tip over the bar from Aaron Bufton. In the 90th minute the hosts came close to extending their lead again when they struck the bar themselves from a corner, which was then followed by a superb effort from outside the box 3 minutes later that also crashed on to the cross-bar. With injury time bringing some end to end chances it was the home side that had to make a last minute block to stop Ashford again a moment later.

Definitely a busy night for both cross-bars!!

Sutton Common Rovers progress to Round 2 where they will host Dorking Wanderers Reserves.
