Tangerines Women on Tour: Newhaven

The ninth club featured on our journey around the London & South-East Regional League Premier Division is Newhaven who will be the first visitors for our Women’s team in 2026-27.

An introduction to the club

Newhaven FC is one of the oldest clubs in Sussex and was founded in the late 1880s by a family of brewers. One of the founding members of the Sussex County League, the Dockers have played in the competition and its successor, the Southern Combination, for more than a century, although they were one match away from Step 4 two years ago, losing the play-off Final at Eastbourne Town.

Newhaven Women are embarking on their third season at Tier Five, having one Division One South of the London & South-East Regional League in 2023-24, finishing two points ahead of Bromley.

About the ground

Newhaven’s Trafalgar Ground is unusual for Tier Five (and Step 5 in men’s non-League football) in that it has seats on all four sides of the ground. The focal point is a large, two-tier Main Stand which was originally intended to be even bigger, only for the costs of the project to prevent further work. There are uncovered seats opposite the Main Stand and behind the goals.

The ground-to-ground road journey is 77.5 miles and will take around 90 minutes. The nearest station is Newhaven Town. Trains leave half hourly from Brighton, serving Falmer and Lewes along the East Coastway line.

From Newhaven Town station, head across the swingbridge and follow the one way system round. Turn left on to South Road and walk along, this then becomes Fort Road.

The ground is situated within Fort Road Recreation Ground and will appear on your right as you approach. It is approximately a 20 minute walk from the station.

Have we played before?

Last season saw Ashford play Newhaven for the first time, with the Ash Trees taking four points from the fixtures.
